Did you know that in the books about 17 years passed between Frodo receiving the ring from Bilbo and then leaving the Shire with it?
While some events from Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings series didn’t make it into the film versions, much of what made Frodo such a beloved character did. We love that some of the bravest and most important characters in the quest to destroy the One Ring were not what you would usually expect of a ‘hero’.
As a hobbit, Frodo is the very best example of how even the smallest in a story can be an unexpected hero, while displaying wisdom in his words. We’ve brought together all the best of Frodo’s lines in this post, from the occasionally humorous to the saddest and the bravest. Let’s jump in!

The Most Famous Lines by Frodo Baggins
Unlike some other Lord of the Rings characters, Frodo doesn’t have that many ‘famous’ lines – but there are still some that are definitely more memorable than others. Here are the most well-known and quotable lines by Frodo Baggins.
“[about Gollum] Maybe he does deserve to die… But now that I see him, I do pity him.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Gollum: We’ll be nice to them, if they be nice to us. Take this off of us… We swear to do whatever you wants… we swear.
Frodo: There is no promise you can make that I can trust.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Sam: We’re innocent travelers.
Faramir: There are no travelers in this land… only servants of the Dark Lord.
Frodo: We are bound to an errand of secrecy. Those who claim to oppose the enemy would do well not to hinder us.”The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Sam: It’s the Ring, isn’t it?
Frodo: It’s getting heavier.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Best Frodo Baggins Quotes about Sam
The relationship between Frodo and his gardener Samwise is perhaps one of the best bromances on screen. Some of of Frodo’s best lines are directed at Sam, so here are our favorite lines Frodo says to or about Sam.
“Frodo: Mordor… I hope the others find a safer road.
Sam: Strider’ll look after them.
Frodo: I don’t suppose we’ll ever see them again.
Sam: We may yet, Mr. Frodo. We may.
Frodo: Sam… I’m glad you’re with me.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Sam: You know I don’t usually hold with foreign food, but this Elvish stuff – it’s not bad.
Frodo: Nothing dampens your spirits, Sam.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Sam: I wonder if we’ll ever be put into songs or tales.
Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, ‘Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring.’ And they’ll say ‘Yes, that’s one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn’t he, Dad?’ ‘Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that’s saying a lot.’
Frodo: You’ve left out one of the chief characters – Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.
Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn’t make fun; I was being serious.
Frodo: So was I.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Frodo: I need you on my side.
Sam: I’m on your side, Mr Frodo.
Frodo: I know, Sam. I know.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
“My dear Sam. You cannot always be torn in two. You will have to be one and whole for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be and to do. Your part in the story will go on.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Funny Frodo Baggins Quotes
At the beginning of the series Frodo is more light-hearted (which makes sense) and humorous. While he loses some of this after the long, hard journey to Mordor, it doesn’t change the fact that he can be funny sometimes. These are the best funny lines by Frodo, even if sometimes he didn’t mean them to be!
“Frodo: You’re late.
Gandalf: A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Frodo: Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of.
Frodo: Never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.
Gandalf: If you’re referring to the incident with the Dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door.
Frodo: Whatever you did, you’ve been officially labeled a disturber of the peace.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Frodo: Come on Sam, ask Rosie for a dance.
Sam: I think I’ll just have another ale.
Frodo: Oh, no you don’t! [pushes Sam at Rosie]” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Frodo: Bilbo, have you been at the Gaffer’s home brew?
Bilbo: No… Well, yes, but that’s not the point…” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Rose ‘Rosie’ Cotton: Good night, lads.
Sam and Frodo: Good night.
Ted Sandyman: [kneels before Rosie] Good night, sweet maiden of the golden ale.
Sam: Oi, mind who you’re sweet talking!
Frodo: Don’t worry Sam, Rosie knows an idiot when she sees one.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
[the Fellowship exits Rivendell, with Frodo in front]
Frodo: Mordor, Gandalf, is it left or right?
Gandalf: Left.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Saddest Frodo Baggins Quotes
The One Ring affects Frodo a lot, bringing him much misery and pain. You can’t help feel sorry for the burden he has to bear, as evidenced by these sad Frodo lines.
“I miss the Shire. I spent all my life pretending I was off somewhere else. Off with you, on one of your adventures. But my own adventure turned out to be quite different. I’m not like you, Bilbo.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Sam: Hey, Stinker! Don’t go getting too far ahead.
Frodo: Why do you do that?
Frodo: Call him names, run him down all the time.
Sam: Because… because that’s what he is, Mr. Frodo. There’s naught left in him but lies and deceit. It’s the ring he wants; it’s all he cares about.
Frodo: You have no idea what it did to him… what it’s still doing to him. I want to help him, Sam.
Frodo: Because I have to believe he can come back.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“The Ring will not save Gondor. It only has the power to destroy. Please, let me go.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Sam: [Frodo stops walking] Mr. Frodo? What is it?
Frodo: Just a thought… I don’t think I’m going to be returning.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
“No, Sam. I can’t recall the taste of food… nor the sound of water… nor the touch of grass. I’m… naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil… between me… and the wheel of fire! I can see him… with my waking eyes!” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
“Frodo: [after destroying the Ring] I can see the Shire. The Brandywine River. Bag End. The Lights in the Party Tree.
Sam: Rosie Cotton dancing. She had ribbons in her hair. If ever I were to marry someone, it would have been her. It would have been her. [he sits down and begins to cry]
Frodo: [leans over and hugs him] I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
“Frodo: We set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved… But not for me.
Sam: [weeping] You don’t mean that. You can’t leave.
Frodo: [hands Sam the Red Book] The last pages are for you, Sam.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Bravest Frodo Baggins Lines
As we’ve mentioned, a lot of Frodo’s courage is quiet and small, rather than epic deeds. But that doesn’t make him any less courageous! These are the best brave quotes by Frodo Baggins, which show his courage and acceptance as a ring-bearer.
“[about the One Ring]
Gandalf: Don’t… tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, Frodo. I would use this ring from a desire to do good… But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.
Frodo: But it cannot stay in the Shire!
Gandalf: No. No, it can’t.
Frodo: What must I do?” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Frodo: I will take it! [they don’t hear him; he raises his voice] I will take it! [they fall silent, looking at him] I will take the Ring to Mordor! Though… I do not know the way.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“Boromir: None of us should wander alone, you least of all. Frodo? I know you suffer, I see it day by day. Are you sure you do not suffer needlessly? There are other ways, Frodo, other paths we might take.
Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart.
Boromir: Warning? Against what? We are all afraid, Frodo. But to let that fear drive us to destroy what hope we have… don’t you see? That is madness!
Frodo: There is no other way.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“[Frodo and Sam are lowering themselves down a cliff]
Sam: Can you see the bottom?
Frodo: No. Don’t look down, Sam, just keep going!” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Frodo: [about his sword] This is Sting. You’ve seen it before, haven’t you… Gollum?
Sam: [choking] Ugh!
Frodo: [sternly] Release him, or I’ll cut your throat!” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“Frodo: What is this place?
Gollum: Master must go inside the tunnel.
Frodo: Now that I’m here, I don’t think I want to.
Gollum: It’s the only way. Go in, or go back.
Frodo: I cannot go back.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
“[about the One Ring] I have to destroy it, Smeagol. I have to destroy it for both our sakes.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Bonus: Frodo Baggins Quotes from the Books
The character of Frodo Baggins is a bit more upbeat in the books than in the films, as evidenced by these quotes that didn’t make it into the movie series. These are the best Frodo lines from the Lord of the Rings books.
“The ring!” exclaimed Frodo. ‘Has he left me that? I wonder why. Still, it may be useful.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“I shall have to go. But-” and here Frodo looked hard at Sam- “if you really care about me, you will have to keep that DEAD secret. See? If you don’t, if you even breathe a word of what you’ve heard here, then I hope Gandalf will turn you into a spotted toad and fill the garden full of grass snakes.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
“I am commanded to go to the land of Mordor, and therefore I shall go,’ said Frodo. ‘If there is only one way, then I must take it. What comes after must come.” The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
“It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.” The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
