Did you know that in the books about 17 years passed between Frodo receiving the ring from Bilbo and then leaving the Shire with it?

While some events from Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings series didn’t make it into the film versions, much of what made Frodo such a beloved character did. We love that some of the bravest and most important characters in the quest to destroy the One Ring were not what you would usually expect of a ‘hero’.

As a hobbit, Frodo is the very best example of how even the smallest in a story can be an unexpected hero, while displaying wisdom in his words. We’ve brought together all the best of Frodo’s lines in this post, from the occasionally humorous to the saddest and the bravest. Let’s jump in!

Frodo: You’ve left out one of the chief characters – Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.

Sam: What?
Frodo: Call him names, run him down all the time.
Sam: Because… because that’s what he is, Mr. Frodo. There’s naught left in him but lies and deceit. It’s the ring he wants; it’s all he cares about.

“[about the One Ring]
Gandalf: Don’t… tempt me Frodo! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, Frodo. I would use this ring from a desire to do good… But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.

Gandalf: No. No, it can’t.
Frodo: What must I do?” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo: I will take it! [they don’t hear him; he raises his voice] I will take it! [they fall silent, looking at him] I will take the Ring to Mordor! Though… I do not know the way.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart.
Boromir: Warning? Against what? We are all afraid, Frodo. But to let that fear drive us to destroy what hope we have… don’t you see? That is madness!
Frodo: There is no other way.” The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
